Anecdotally, we all know that the way we work — and the way we want to continue working in the future — has fundamentally changed. Now, thanks to new research that investigates employee attitudes around hybrid working models, we have real data that supports what we’ve all been feeling on a gut level. Not only that, but these findings can help define the path forward for businesses ready to embrace the future of work.
Key findings from the research show employees with the autonomy to choose the way of working that’s best for them are happier and more content in their roles. And, in turn, the benefits of that satisfaction ladder back up to the company as a whole, with employees that are more productive and feel a greater sense of loyalty. However, the research also points to a real need for businesses to equip their employees with the right digital tools to support hybrid work.
Hybrid workers know they’ve got a good thing going for them. Of those currently splitting their time between their home and an office, 85% said they would like to continue working under a hybrid model in the future. And nearly half of workers who are in an office full time now would like an opportunity for more flexible arrangements.
Those desires are clearly reflected in employee loyalty, which can have a huge impact on a company’s reputation, turnover rate, and ability to attract top-tier talent.
More than any other group, hybrid workers endorse their employers. Nearly two-thirds said they would recommend working for their company, compared to just over half of both fully remote employees and those in an office full time.
Job seekers are also increasingly ranking the option of flexible work as a high priority in their search for a new role, which means companies that have embraced hybrid models are at a significant advantage.
In a job market where the competition for top-tier talent is at an all-time high, strong endorsements from current employees and the ability to offer working conditions that match changing desires can give companies a leg up in building — and retaining — skilled teams.
A whopping 69% of all workers surveyed — and 76% of those who are currently hybrid — agreed that being able to split their time between home and the office shows that their company takes into consideration the emotional well-being of its employees. Offering flexible work options is a fundamental way for companies to make their employees feel valued.
For employees, having control over where they get their work done pays off with substantial improvements to work-life balance, with benefits like less time spent commuting, better ability to manage the home, and improved mental health. Almost a third of respondents said that saving time on commuting means they can accomplish more tasks in a given day. Furthermore, nearly a fifth of those surveyed said that they are both more productive and more enthused about their work.
Creating hybrid options means a happier, healthier workforce, which in turn means employees are empowered to do their best work. With high-performing teams, companies can then become high-performing businesses.
Flexible work has proven to not only be possible, but practical. 78% of managers believe their business has been streamlined because of hybrid working, and 80% trust their employees to get their work done remotely.
But to be truly effective, hybrid employees need the right tools to make their flexible schedules seamless. Currently, only 51% think that their company is using the right digital tools to support flexible work, and similarly, only 50% feel their company is open to feedback in this area. Even more alarming, only 12% believed their company had invested in new tech to support changed working behaviors.
This leaves a huge opportunity for companies that want to become leaders in a space where so many others are still falling short. Employers can set their teams up for ongoing success by embracing technology as a key component to their company’s hybrid work strategy.
